How we start our day greatly influences how it unfolds. We can either start it in a rush, or we can pause, breathe and take a moment to set the tone and pace for our day.
If you are not already an early riser, consider a morning routine that starts with the sun. Set your alarm clock to get in the habit of waking with the sun. Sunshine isn’t just a symbolic and cheery way to welcome a new day, it is a real, human need. Exposure to morning sunlight results in greater alertness. Morning light exposure can also lead to better sleep, which can have a cascade effect on mood the next day.
This extra found time in the morning offers a simple opportunity to hold space for ourselves. Start simply, just by savoring your morning by drinking your first cup of coffee with mindfulness. It is a simple way to slow your thoughts down and just rest in the moment. Using your coffee time as meditation is a great way to incorporate mindfulness into your day.
Mindfulness according to John Kabat Zinn is “Paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement.” Which means you can practice meditation and mindfulness while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
Smell the aroma of your warm brew as you slowly pour it into your mug. Sit quietly with your warm cup of coffee and just feel your body unfold as you take your first sip. Feel the heat of the coffee in your mouth. Hold it there a minute to allow your taste buds time to register the taste. Swallow and feel the warmth travel down your throat and warm your body. Take a deep breath, savor the moment and then take another sip. Each time becoming more aware of the sensations happening in your body with each sip. If your mind begins to drift, slowly bring your thoughts back to the cup of coffee. This is a simple way to slow your thoughts down and just rest in the moment.
Remember, your day starts when you open your eyes, and how you welcome yourself makes all the difference. It is an act of self-love and self-respect. Give yourself at least 10 minutes every morning, you will be glad you woke up early.
