Simple Self-Care Practices - 5 Minutes or Less

Infuse your day with simple self-care tools that can be used to help take a pause and reset when needed throughout your day. All of these tips can be done in 5 minutes or less.

Take a Breathing Break: “4-7-8 breathing,” is a breath pattern based on ancient yogic techniques. This technique can put you in a relaxed state almost instantly. You’ll love how simple it is!

  • Exhale completely and through your mouth. It should make a whooshing sound.

  • Inhale slowly and quietly through your nose to a count of four.

  • Hold your breath for a seven-count.

  • Exhale through your mouth... completely making that whoosh sound again. Do this for a count of eight.

  • Repeat this cycle three times. You will feel refreshed and focused!

Tea Time: Tea contains theanine which could improve cognition while at the same time making you feel relaxed. Since the afternoon often brings with it the strong desire for a nap, tea can perk you up without the dehydrating effects of another cup of coffee. Put on the kettle, steep your favorite tea and savor it. A mid-afternoon tea offers a quiet pause in your day and serves as a great reset button...a chance to gather your thoughts, breathe and prepare for the coming evening and bedtime routines.

Treat Yourself with Dark Chocolate: I’m not sure about you, but I tend to get cravings for junk food in the afternoon. Snack on a small piece of dark chocolate to satisfy your craving. The flavonoids in cocoa have been shown to lower blood pressure, improve mood, and potentially increase mental focus.

Listen To Music: Listening to music is an easy, convenient way to relieve stress. Music can have a relaxing effect on our minds and bodies. Studies show music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.

Take a Yoga Break: A single yoga pose done with mindful breathing and intent can change the way you feel instantly. Reset with a simple forward fold. This pose calms your mind and stretches the entire back side of your body. Basic yoga poses can make a world of difference when you want to reset and get back to center.

Give these simple tips a try...reclaim your energy and make the most of today!

Be Well!
